From June the 12th till the 27th of June I was in the beautiful city of Berlin. Berlin is not just aesthetically beautiful in the sense of the architecture such as the Reichstag and the Universities but also beautiful in an odd way. One of the first things you notice about Berlin is the copious amounts of graffiti, it's not just the graffiti you get in England, it seems much more artistic and more thought out. Obviously you have just spray paint and writing, but I appreciated the graffiti a lot more than I thought I would. It was so artistic and just generally intriguing.
Berlin is an exciting city, there are so many cool places to drink, to eat to see. I was there for two weeks and in all honesty I didn't see half of what Berlin has to offer. I was a typical tourist, I walked round with a map attached to me, trying to work out where we were going, sometimes to no avail. I had my Berlin guide book in my backpack, which was taken out a considerable amount of times, and is a must have. Berlin is a city that is a pleasure to be lost in, you can't find where you're supposed to be going but you end up somewhere beautiful. This happened to us on a number of occasions. Berlin is a cool city, it's full of tea shops, incredible museums, coffee houses, book shops, vintage shops and so much more. I would recommend it to anybody really. I stayed in Prenzlauerberg, which is known as the baby district, it was full of cool, hip young families and there was a park across the way from our apartment; I'm not ashamed to admit that I did go to the park a few times.
I visited the National Galerie which was completely beautiful, we ended up being there for 4 hours, completely losing track of time. In there they have an Andy Warhol exhibition and an Anthony McCall exhibition, both which are utterly brilliant. Also the Dali museum is an absolute delight, with chairs in the shape of lips and a piano on water, it's full of his sketches and his early works. I am a huge Dali and also Warhol fan, so I was completely in my element.
If you're like me and are interested in travel, you would want to go to the museums, the government building the parks, the monuments and of course in Berlin, you'd go to the Berlin Wall; well what's left of it. The tearing down of the Berlin Wall and just the Berlin Wall in general is such an intrinsic part of Berlin's history. The separation of the Eats and the West, the citizens of each side, had never seen the other side of their own city. The mile that is left of the Berlin Wall is known as the East Side Gallery, artists have used the Berlin Wall as their canvas, and done all sorts of beautiful and interesting pieces of art on the wall. It really is a sight to behold, some parts hold poignant messages about freedom and there is just an array of everything.
Berlin has a very wide range of night life, from street parties under the S bahn with hundreds and hundreds of people and dj's, to rock clubs like Wild at Heart, to Berghain - we shan't get into Berghain. To an underground indie/restaurant white trash. All of which are incredible, Berlin offers everything to everybody quite literally when it comes to Berghain.
Berlin is interesting, fun, exciting, beautiful, cultured and pretty fantastic if truth be told. Berlin is a good idea!
